ISIS and the Crusades
9 February 2015
From what some in the media are reporting, there is a big flap over statements which president Obama made at the annual National Prayer Breakfast last Thursday.

Recent headlines include: DEBKAfile’s news update — Outrage over Obama’s likening ISIS to Crusaders — gives a succinct overview:
A torrent of outrage greeted President Barack Obama’s comments at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday which drew a parallel between the atrocities of the Islamic State and the Crusaders.

“From a school in Pakistan to the streets of Paris, we have seen violence and terror perpetrated by those who profess to stand up for faith — their faith — professed to stand up for Islam, but, in fact are betraying it,” he said, describing the Islamic State as “a brutal, vicious death cult that, in the name of religion, carries out unspeakable acts of barbarism.”

But he went on to say: “Lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ,” Obama said. “In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ.”

Criticism of Obama’s comments ranged from “an attempt to deflect guilt from Muslim madmen” to “an offense against every believing Christian in the United States” and “the most offensive remark ever heard from a president.”
Seeing that I almost never agree with what Obama has to say, and that I have very little respect for him, I am amazed that in this case I think his statements were generally correct. Let’s take a few moments to hold each thought up to the light to see how well they reflect truth and reality.

Regarding ISIS, Obama said that they are “brutal, vicious ... carry out unspeakable acts of barbarism in the name of religion.” This is a true and accurate statement about the Islamic State. And if you have read your history, you already know that it is a very accurate description of the “Christian” Crusaders.

Christianity in the 11th century: “For the first decade, the Crusaders pursued a policy that included mass executions, the throwing of severed heads over besieged cities walls, exhibition and mutilation of naked cadavers, and even cannibalism, as was recorded after the Siege of Maarat.”
If you take the time to compare the atrocities committed by ISIS to those committed by the Crusaders, it is obvious that both religious groups were/are inspired by Satan, mankind’s greatest enemy, who was a murderer from the beginning (John 8:44).

The Crusaders slaughtered Jews and Muslims in the name of Yeshua (Isa, Jesus) — the very One who taught His followers to love their enemies and turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:38‑48).

Rather than following the example of Satan by dispatching unbelievers to hell, true followers of Yeshua will follow His example by sharing in His sufferings and laying down their lives for their enemies. As it is, the hearts of Muslims are still very closed to the Good News of Yeshua because of the evil committed against them by the Crusaders in His name and in the sign of the cross.

Many people who call themselves Christian try to justify the Crusades by saying that they were a legitimate response to Muslim aggression, and that if “Christians” had not taken up arms to defend themselves and their lands, Europe would have become Islamic a thousand years ago.

In reality, the Crusaders were not followers of Yeshua at all, but mere pagans who were concerned only with their earthly lives and earthly kingdoms. If they had truly been concerned about the Kingdom of God, it would have been a thousand times better for Europe to have been conquered by Islam rather than the Crusaders defiling and dishonoring the name of Yeshua by their evil actions.

The Muslims needed to see the loving, crucified life of Yeshua lived out in His people — THAT would have been the weapon which would have defeated Islam. Instead, all the Muslims saw was the satanic “power over” kingdom of pagan Christianity, which is the opposite of the teaching of the New Testament. A careful reading of the words of Yeshua and His early followers will clearly show that there is no defense for Christian self-defense.
Obama also stated that “In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ.”

As before, if you read the history about Christianity and slavery in North America, you will see that Obama’s statement is true. As the famous former slave Frederick Douglass once wrote:
Between the Christianity of this land, and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible difference — so wide, that to receive the one as good, pure, and holy, is of necessity to reject the other as bad, corrupt and wicked.... I love the pure, peaceable, and impartial Christianity of Christ; I therefore hate the corrupt, slaveholding, women-whipping, cradle-plundering, partial and hypocritical Christianity of this land. Indeed, I can see no reason, but the most deceitful one, for calling the religion of this land Christianity.

I assert most unhesitatingly, that the religion of the South is a mere covering for the most horrid crimes — a justifier of the most appalling barbarity, a sanctifier of the most hateful frauds, and a dark shelter under which the darkest, foulest, grossest, and most infernal deeds of slave holders find the strongest protection. Were I to be again reduced to the chains of slavery, next to that enslavement, I should regard being the slave of a religious master the greatest calamity that could befall me.
Frederick Douglass had a lot more to say about Christianity and slavery that you would do well to study — read it and weep! His eloquent honesty damns the travesty of pagan “Christianity.” Before I close, I must point out that one aspect of Obama’s statements is NOT accurate. As I discussed in The Blind Leading the Blind, Obama constantly insists that the atrocities of ISIS do NOT reflect “true” Islam, but are an evil distortion and betrayal of Islam. This is a willful closing of the eyes to reality. As I wrote in Islamic Child Abuse:
Let’s consider two men — one who calls himself a Christian and one who calls himself a Muslim. They both engage in polygamy, pedophilia, slave-owning (including adult and child female sex slaves captured in war), wife-beating, murder, lying, physical violence against unbelievers, beheading, stealing, revenge, rape, gluttony, greed and more. What is the difference between these two men who commit identical acts?

For the man who calls himself a Christian, he is NOT following the example of Yeshua, and he is NOT following the teaching of the New Testament. By his gross disobedience, he is proving the he is NOT a true Christian.

For the man who calls himself a Muslim, he IS following the example of Muhammad, and he IS following the teaching of the Qur'an. By his devoted obedience, he is proving that he IS a true Muslim.
The Crusaders, Inquisitors, and slave owners referred to by Obama were NOT following the example of Yeshua, and were NOT following the teaching of the New Testament. In contrast, ISIS and other jihadist around the world ARE following the example of Muhammad, and ARE following the teachings of the Qur'an and the Hadith. Research the matter yourself and you will find that what I am saying is true, and that Obama’s statements about this are false.

Pamela Geller makes some vital points in her article Obama: “We are summoned to push back against those who would distort OUR RELIGION for their nihilistic ends”
Contrary to his claims that Christians were slaughtering in the name of Christ, we see none of that. Nowhere do you see Christians beheading, setting alight, or crucifying non-Christians while screaming “Christ is greatest!”

Obama freely brought up Christianity’s ancient history, but did not mention Islam’s 1,400-year bloody history of jihadi war, land appropriations, cultural annihilations and enslavements. He failed to mention the 1,400-year jihad against the Jews raging still today against Israel and Jews across the world. And of course he did not discuss the religion’s bloody jihad now.

On the contrary, he falsely claimed it was being “hijacked.” Hijacked, how? Jihadists are citing Quran chapter and verse. They are using Muhammad as their “perfect example.” Obama never said Christianity had been hijacked a thousand years ago.

Jesus did not behead, kill, rape or steal from conquered people, calling the theft righteous booty. Jesus did not marry a six-year-old. Mohammed did. And he slaughtered untold numbers, with his mujahadeen raping and pillaging every bloody step of the way.
That is the similarity of ISIS and the Crusaders, but more fundamentally, the difference between true Islam and true Christianity.
